Research : Pregnancy detection kit for cattles

We conducted this research from 2018-2022 in collaboration with National Agriculture Research Center and funding secured from Swiss Embassy. Our developing product was pregnancy detection kit for cattle that can detect pregnancy from milk or blood within 30 days after insemination.

In buffalos conception does not necessarily occur at the first breeding and have to be inseminated or mated several times. Our product Pregnancy detection Kit of Cattle, was meant to be noble in sense that this kind of kit had not yet been introduced in the market. It was meant to be highly reliable and effective in determining the status of pregnancy in cattle as well as easy to use. This kit would have helped the farmers to make rational decision by knowing the status of pregnancy beforehand with minimum risks.

Our hypothesis was to develop a product “Pregnancy detection kit” for cattle that detects pregnancy from milk or blood within 30 days. This non-invasive technique for detection maintains health of the cattle since current method for detecting pregnancy by vet doctor was invasive method that can lead to infection in internal organs as well as there is a high level of conception rate failure and problem in repeat breeding. Early detection reduces the time for second conception so that they can earn money during short duration. Our kit could be >95% accurate so was more reliable than other detection tests from urine using barium chloride or sodium benzoate that often give false results so even laboratory cannot give conformation. Also, we targeted to produce our kit within the range that farmers can afford.

The right to know whether an animal is pregnant  or not soon after mating or insemination is often difficult and unrealiable. Hence the production of a reliable yet simple diagnostic pregnancy test for cattle was that it should correctly identify both pregnant and non-pregnant females. Unfortunately we had to end our project beacuse of scientific limitations. However, we were extremely proud of the effort we put in this project. Although we couldn’t succeed but this project had definetly set a ground for future projects and estanlished trust across the sector.
